Civil ceremony

The civil wedding in Italy must be celebrated by the mayor of the chosen city or by an officiant who takes his place.

The civil ceremony lasts about 20 minutes: it starts with a brief introduction by the officiant, after it will be read the civil code’s articles concerning the marriage, then it will be asked to the couple if they accept rights and duties related to the wedding, finally there will be the exchange of rings followed by the proclamation of marriage.

The civil ceremony can be celebrated in the town hall, or in beautiful locations such as historic villas owned by municipality. Sometimes it is salso possible to use outdoor areas as the beautiful gardens of municipal residences.
